Know the Add-Ons

Optional products you're allowed to say no to.

Some of these can be worth it for the right buyer. None of them should appear on your contract without being explained and agreed to. Ask for the price of each one separately.

  • Extended service contracts
  • GAP coverage
  • Paint and fabric protection
  • VIN etching / theft protection
  • Nitrogen-filled tires
  • Tire and wheel packages
  • Pre-installed dealer accessories
  • Prepaid maintenance plans

Red flags on a deal

  • Every answer comes back to "what monthly payment works for you?"
  • The loan term quietly stretched to 84 months to hit a payment.
  • Add-ons already printed on the paperwork as if they were required.
  • Driving home before your financing is final, then being called back to sign new terms.
  • A trade-in number that only looks good because the price went up.

Bring These Questions

Seven questions to ask any dealership.

  1. What is the out-the-door price, in writing?

Include tax, tag, title, and every fee.

  2. What is the dealer fee, and what does it cover?

Florida dealers must disclose it. Ask for the amount up front.

  3. Which items on this sheet are optional?

Ask for each to be listed with its own price.

  4. What APR and loan term is this payment based on?

A low payment over a long term can cost far more overall.

  5. Which lenders will see my application?

You should know before you consent.

  6. Is my financing final before I take the car?

Get a clear yes or no.

  7. Can I see the VIN and vehicle history?

Confirm it's the exact vehicle you agreed to.
